REMARKABLE JUMPING FOALS FOR SPORT AND BREEDING

Aug 23, 2020

Showjumper breeding revolves around sport. However, which bloodlines are interesting when you are looking for a filly to breed with in the future? Or a stallion prospect? We asked Floris van Leuken which foals are the highlights of Foal Auction Borculo!

“Due to the coronacrisis we had to start our selection process later this year, however we are very satisfied with the selection. Each foal descends from a strong damline with lots of sport, often combined with established stallions. We also want to offer young sires a chance. We have tried to do this slightly different than others, in order to remain distinctive. I think we have accomplished this goal”, says Floris van Leuken enthusiastically. “All foals we have selected are interesting from a breeding standpoint. They all feature lots of sport in the damline, so every foal is suitable for both sport and breeding.”

Fillies for breeding
So which foals are an extra attractive acquisition for breeding? “We have two fillies from the Roosakker-lineage. One by Catoki and one by Grandorado TN. Catoki’s offspring are rare and he has proven himself as a top sire, making this blood highly exclusive. Grandorado seems to become a new top progenitor, a relatively young stallion but combined with an established damline, making this foal very compelling. The Dominator out of the direct damline of Numero Uno would also be a great foal for future breeding.”

According to Floris van Leuken, the two fillies by Hardrock Z also stand out. “Both foals would be great to start your breeding with. One of the two Hardrock-foals has a half-brother that jumps 1.60m. The dam has produced a quality auction foals before.”

Must-haves
The jumper breeding is also prone to various trends. Floris van Leuken indicates which jumper bloodlines should be present in the stable of any jumper rider or breeder. “Chacco-Blue is and remains highly desired. In the auction we have a filly of him out of a solid Holsteiner-damline. This foal would be suitable for both sport and breeding.” For the first time, Foal Auction Borculo auctions several embryos. “Two of them are sired by Chacco-Blue. The third embryo is by Emerald, his blood is in demand as well, especially combined with the Roosakker-lineage.” Chacfly produced a colt in the collection. “Chacfly is also very popular right now and here combined with the blood of Heartbreaker and Darco.”

Stallion prospects
Which stallions and which damlines will make the difference in the future? In other words, which colts are interesting for stallion rearing and eventual stallion shows? “We have a remarkable foal by Eldorado in the collection. His dam is by Carthino and from a quality-anchored damline.” Emerald produced two colts in this collection. One Emerald is combined with the damline of Qerly Chin and the other has a dam and granddam that competed at 1.60m level, with the dam having foaled two 1.60m horses herself already. “These are foals that have some serious sport performance in their lineage.”

The Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve out of the direct damline of Vingino and somewhat further Verdi, is also an interesting stallion prospect. An attractive foal that already drew up some attention.” According to Floris van Leuken, Aganix is one of the new top progenitors. “His son is out of the damline of Agana van het Gerendal, making him an interesting colt with the future stallion approvals in mind.” The same can be said about the colt by Carambole. “This foal is a three-quarters brother of Hello Senator, giving us high hopes for sport and breeding. As does the foal by Don VHP Z out of the dam of Willem Greve’s Carrera.”

Exclusive boodlines
And what if you are looking for something really special? Which foals are the one to watch then? “The blood by Tinka’s Boy is extremely exclusive and the colt in this collection comes out of a great damline. Cumano-offspring are also rare, so we are very happy that we were able to select a foal by him. This colt is modern, has a good canter and has sport written all over his athletic body.”

Chianti’s Champion also has not covered many mares. “This stallion is doing very well in sports. There are very few offspring by this stallion and the foal in this collection is outstanding. This year, the stallion All Star has produced his first crop of foals after his sports career and the two colt we have selected seem very good.”
